Amami Dining

Maasa* Local Amami Cuisine

* Maasa is the word in Amami dialect for delicious

Keihan (seasoned chicken and rice) is a local cuisine iconic of Amami and eaten on celebratory occasions or when welcoming guests. Somen noodles came to Amami in the late-Edo era (1603-1868). Each restaurant and home has its own particular arrangement, such as yuuzomen, where the noodles are stir-fried in broth and oil. Seafood is also abundant in Amami cuisine. Amami delicacies include terada clams called tobinnya.

Yoronjima

Is this Heaven? Paradise?
At Yoronjima, go on an undersea walk, dive, enjoy clear skies and seas.
There’s no need for words on this island.

Kikaijima is an island made of coral.

The island is a 5-minute flight from Amami Airport. Upon taking-off, immediately get notice to prepare for landing! A circumnavigation of the island is approximately 48 km. Coral has been rising for 100,000 years and continues to do so even now, going up several millimeters every year. Coral reef terraces viewed from Hyakunodai Park are regarded as one of the 10 top scenes in Amami. Find materials and exhibits to learn about the reefs at the KIKAI Institute for Coral Reef Sciences, where study on the reefs continues to be ongoing.

The sound of the shamisen reverberates. It’s used in combination with the chijin (drum) and people sing shimauta island songs and dance in a circle. As night fell in the eisa festival experience, I felt tipsy and went outside to be greeted by a sky full of stars. Both the heart and mind were lightened by the mysteriousness of nature and being surrounded by smiling faces. Touring the Amami islands showed that each island is packed with its own charms.
